Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve: How Aprios Supports Long-Term Ecological Research

Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve, a sprawling 5,600-acre plot of land, is home to some of the most significant long-term ecological studies in the world. These studies primarily focus on biodiversity and the intricate relationships between humans and the natural environment. At the heart of these research efforts is the need for consistency, which ensures the validity and reliability of the data collected over decades.

One critical tool in these studies is a pair of mechanical clippers used extensively by the research team. Unfortunately, the manufacturer of these clippers went out of business, leaving the Cedar Creek team with a challenging problem: the gears in the clippers began to fail, but maintaining the use of these specific clippers was essential to avoid introducing variables that could compromise the studies.

Recognizing the importance of these tools, Aprios stepped in to help. By creating a precise CAD model, Aprios was able to 3D print replacement gears for the Cedar Creek team, often delivering these parts in less than a week. This quick turnaround is crucial, as the team at Cedar Creek frequently has only a limited window to gather biomass samples.

Recently, Aprios had the opportunity to sit down with Troy Mieke, a Research Assistant at Cedar Creek, to discuss the ongoing studies and his experience working with Aprios. Troy emphasized the significance of the fast turnaround times, which enable the team to continue their critical research without interruption.

The collaboration between Cedar Creek and Aprios showcases the vital role that innovative manufacturing solutions can play in supporting scientific research, ensuring that essential tools remain available, even in the face of unexpected challenges.
